Another Reason to love Google!

Gmail + Mozilla = Gspace

About year ago, I blogged and raved about Google's latest creations. By now, those features have become a classic. To celebrate GOOG's biggest stock price jump in recent memory, a whopping +33.61 (7.89%) in a single day to $459.67, I liked to introduced GSPACE developed by Rahul Jonna early this month. Yes, 7% gain isn't much, but 7% of a $139 billion dollar market cap is a sudden surge of $10 billion! Actually this blog is also dedicated to those who commented on my previous blogs. I seriously don't think anyone would read them. Anyway, this Firefox addon is the coolest gadget ever and yet its virtual which is what makes it a must have addon. It practically eliminates the need of a 2gb USB drive, a $50 savings. What a concept. For those Treky fans out there, yes I'm a Furangie.

Okay, so what's GSpace? It is a virtual drive accessible anywhere there's a computer. Think of it as a virtual 2gb USB drive without having to carry it around or afraid of misplacing it. Either way, you'll need a computer to access. Image having access to your resume, cool hacking software, important docs, family photos or whatever you like wherever? Of course the computer must be internet accessible and you'll need a both a Gmail account and Mozilla Firefox browser. Shame on you if you don't already have them.

How do I get this? Get a Gmail account and install Firefox version 1.5 or later

1. Click on https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1593/.
2. Scroll down a bit if necessary and click on "Install" after its done downloading.
3. Restart Firefox as it'll install it.
4. Click on Tools, Select Gspace.
5. You may need to do Control-T and log into your gmail account so that it'll know which account to associate the gspace with.
6. Start transferring files to your GSpace.

You may even create directories to better organize your files. Now go into your inbox. You'll notice there's a much of email from yourself. Don't delete them as that's how the Gspace is used. You can easily clean them up by creating filters.
  1. Logon to Gmail.
  2. Click on "Edit Labels" in the green box at the bottom left corner.
  3. Type "GSPACE" in the Create a new label box and click on Create
  4. Click on the Filters tab.
  5. Click on the Create a new filter link.
  6. In the Create a Filter dialog, enter GSPACE into the Subject: field.
  7. Click on the Test Search button and then press the Next Step button.
  8. Put a checkmark in the Skip the Inbox (Archive it), Apply the label as well as the Also apply filter to checkboxs and then press the Create Filter button. GSPACE should be the default label.
Now all those GSPACE emails should be gone. If not, at least the new transfered files will not appear in your inbox. They're archived which can be seen when you click on the All Mail folder or better yet, click on GSPACE in the Label box. Only the one marked GSPACE will be displayed. Now you can easily transfer work file home and back. Enjoy! Of course there's more cool Google features such as Calendar and collaborable online spreadsheets, but I just haven't use them as much.
